6 Day Kootenay National Park Hiking
HT#14 Kootenay National Park
Overview: There is no better way to experience nature than to immerse yourself into the wilderness. This backpacking adventure was created to do just this. We will hike up to a picturesque mountain destination, and then enjoy discovering all it has to offer. On our explorations through this land, we will never return exactly the same way we came; our chances of viewing wildlife in its natural habitat will increase with our emphasis on being aware in our remote environment; and new experiences will continually arise and impress. You will have the opportunity to see green forests and mountain peaks as far as the eye can see; to hear the sounds of the natural world, like a raging waterfall, trickling stream, or the sound of silence; to smell the natural growth cycles and thousands of wildflowers in the sub-alpine meadows; and taste clean, crystal clear water. Our many exciting day hikes and excursions on this trip will provide adventure at each turn and experiences that will influence you for possibly years to come. This is a refreshing opportunity to actually live in the high alpine for a few days to learn, explore, and discover the incredible majesty of nature and our rugged and beautiful wilderness playground.
Day
Itinerary
01
Your arrival day into the wilderness retreat. A hot evening meal will be served over some friendly introductions, followed by some final preparations and orientation before settling in to a relaxing night at the cabins
02
Bright and early we set out to the trailhead of the gorgeous Marvel Pass. We follow Aurora Creek for the first few kilometers and work our way up to the pass around the towering Mt. Eon. Lush forest, old avalanche runs, boulder fields, and sub-alpine meadows set the stage for our base camp near Aurora Lakes.
03
After breakfast, we hike out today to explore either Owl Lake, enshrouded in dense forest, or the alpine shoulder of Mt. Aurora, both quite different eco-systems from the open pass. There are different species of wildflowers as well as different wildlife viewing opportunities. Throughout the day we may engage in a unique nature awareness activity based on native teachings to add to the experience. We eat our evening meal back at the base camp and will have the evening to relax.
04
After breakfast we head out to the ridges flanking the end of Marvel Pass. The meadows along the pass will be carpeted with thousands of colourful wildflowers, from Indian Paintbrush, and the mythical Bluebell, to Mountain Heather, and Columbines. There may even be passing deer, elk, marmot, or even bear. The pass is a playground waiting to be experienced and today we will enjoy what it has to offer. From high atop the ridges, we will have a spectacular view of Marvel Lake and Gloria Lake, nestled beneath the sixth highest mountain in the Rockies, Mt. Assiniboine. We may also get the opportunity today for a nature awareness activity to enhance the already present feeling of wonder.
05
After breakfast and packing up our base camp, we set out on our way back to the trailhead. We arrive back at at the lodge just in time for a delicious, hot dinner, and a relaxing, well-deserved soak in our outdoor, wood-fired, hot tub.
06
A relaxing morning is in order with a hearty breakfast before we say goodbye and part ways until next time.
