4 Day Skyline Trail Jasper National Park
HT#19 Skyline Trail Jasper National Park
Overview: This is the highest trail in Jasper. Twenty five of its 45 kilometers (28 miles) are above treeline with marvelous wildflower meadows and a 360 degree panorama of mountains above “the Notch.” The altitude gain is a wonderfully reasonable 820 meters (2700 feet), however this trip is best done later in the season (August to October) to avoid remaining snow. Plan for 3 to 4 days for this alpine adventure in the Maligne Range of the Canadian Rockies. Because this trail begins at world famous Maligne Lake and ends at the Signal Mountain Fire Road, we have added a shuttle bus trip to/from trail. This is the most popular trip and our favourite in Jasper so please contact us early to make reservations.
Day
Itinerary
01
Start your backpacking journey at Maligne Lake. The first leg of the trail, to Evelyn Creek, is a fairly gentle ascent for about 5 km. Stop at the Evelyn Creek campground for a rest and a snack. Our next stop, 3.5 km along switchbacks, will be where we stay for the night. It's the Little Shovel campsite and it has some spectacular views of mountains ranges on three sides. We will set up camp. Dinner.
02
Easy hike to Little Shovel Pass. For the next 4 km we hike through rocky alpine terrain. Overnight at Curator Campground within the protection of trees.
03
Follow the trail from Curator Lake to the Notch – the highest point (2480 m) of the trail. The trail becomes more and more treacherous due to the steepness of the slope and the narrowness of the trail. The hike from the Notch is probably the highlight of the trip since the 360 degree views along the ridges around were simply breathtaking ! The term ocean of mountains comes to mind. We descended into Tekarra Valley. The rest of the hike to the Tekarra campground is a gentle descent along the valley floor, with Mount Tekarra looming to our left. Dinner and overnight.
04
Today is our final day on the trail and includes a descent of almost a vertical kilometer by the time we reach the northern trailhead. The hike involves a gradual ascent back above the treeline with a great view of another side of Mount Tekarra and views to the Colin Range and the Queen Elizabeth Range. The terrain is beautiful with lots of rock and windswept alpine meadows. Lunch stop at the Signal Mountain Campground. The remainder of the trail provides narrow views along the way but, for the most part it leads through the trees. Van pick up from the end of the trail and return transfer to Jasper.
