5 Day Yoho National Park Hiking
HT#07 Yoho National Park Hiking
Overview: For those hikers who desire a backcountry experience but do not wish to "rough it," we have added a more economical version of our lodge trips. Spend 3 nights in a cozy log hut high up in the backcountry. The hut has a common room with a wood stove, a cooking area and a sleeping area. Savour spectacular scenery and the smell of fresh mountain air. Hike some fairly strenuous trails up to glaciers, waterfalls, and mountain ridges that will lie waiting just outside our front door! Curious ground squirrels and gray jays will no doubt also greet us in the morning. After delicious evening meals in this charming and rustic hut, you will have time to read or chat with your fellow adventurers. Learn about the area's natural and human history from our very knowledgeable interpretive guide. Later, you may step outside the hut and, in the absence of "light pollution" from human civilization, be greeted by the magic of a silent starlit evening. You might feel surprised that such a rugged environment can feel so peaceful and gentle. On this trip your guide prepares the meals from our carefully planned menus, your responsibility is to kickback and enjoy. Please Note: All campgrounds used during this tour are accessible by vehicle. For the day excursions and day hikes you carry only your personal gear (lunch, rain gear, camera, etc.) Backpacking is not necessary and hiking or climbing experience is not required
Day
Itinerary
01
A pre-tour meeting, starting at 7:30 AM is held at our central meeting location near downtown Calgary. It’s time for introductions and to receive your unique Blue Moose welcome package. Coffee, tea, juice and fruit are provided. The guide will answer any questions and outline the tour detials (itinerary, safety, equipment and environmental guidelines, etc.) Departure is approximately at 9:00 AM. The tour starts with a drive through the Alberta foothills to front range of the Rockies where you enter Banff National Park. Marvel as the peaks get larger as we get closer to Lake Louise, which is along the continental divide. You spend the day exploring the area around the world famous Chateau Lake Louise, including the stunningly beautiful Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks. You will camp in Lake Louise by the Bow River.
02
The entire day is reserved for a guided day hike in the Lake Louise area. With the continental divide and some of Banff National Park's highest peaks in the area, we have plenty of spectacular hikes to choose from. We return to camp for a hot shower and a campfire cooked meal. You’ll be surprised what you can cook over a campfire! You have time to enjoy one of the evening interpretive programs hosted by Parks Canada.
03
It will be a day for a guided hike in Yoho National Park. Yoho is known for its abundant and diverse wildlife and the available hikes find you wandering on mountain ridges above tree-line and through alpine meadows.
04
In the morning we have time for a visit to Emerald Lake and a possible hike to the Burgess Shale Fossil bed, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. If the Burgess Shale hike is not available, you will have a chance for another great hike in the emerald lake area. The Burgess Shale Fossil Bed hike is a very strenuous hike and is only available on trips from early July to mid September - another hike will be taken during other dates or if the hike is not available. The Burgess Shale hikes book well in advance. (2-3 months) so advanced bookings are required. The cost of the Burgess Shale hike is NOT included in the cost.
05
In the early morning you head back over the continental divide and return through Banff National Park. We arrive in the town of Banff via the scenic Bow valley Parkway.
