HT#12 Strathcona Park Hiking
|
Overview: Located almost in the centre of Vancouver Island, Strathcona Provincial Park is a rugged mountain wilderness comprising more than 250,000 hectares. Mountain peaks - some perpetually mantled with snow dominate the park. Lakes and alpine tarns dot a landscape laced with rivers, creeks and streams. The park was created for those who seek adventure in remote wilderness environment. Summer in Strathcona is usually pleasantly warm. A 25 km trek (much of it off-trail) traversing the fourth highest peak on Vancouver Island (Mt. Albert Edward) from alpine flower meadows to spectacular visual highlights of glaciers, mountains and the Strait of Georgia. Start in the alpine and finish at Buttle Lake, almost at sea level.

Day 1 4:00 Meet your instructor in Courtenay and take SPL transport up to our Alpine Chalet at Mt. Washington. Stretch your legs in the alpine before dinner. Review maps and trip objectives, dig into a hearty meal, and soak in the hot tub or take a sauna prior to taxing your muscles the following day.
Day 2 After a delicious breakfast we start our hiking adventure to Circlet Lake. At first the trail follows forested slopes over rougher terrain before rising to a rolling subalpine area. Enjoy the spectacular mountain views at Hairtrigger Lake. We camp at Circlet Lake.
Day 3 Today we hike the ridge to the top of Mt. Albert Edward. Western red cedar, Douglas fir, grand fir and western hemlock of the coast forest cover much of the valleys and lower mountain slopes, giving way to sub-alpine fir, mountain hemlock and creeping juniper in the sub-alpine areas. Through the summer, the park offers a spectacular floral display from sea level to above 1,800 meters. From the top of Mt. Albert Edward enjoy great views of other snow capped mountains, lakes and Golden Hinde. We pitch our tents at Ruth Masters Lake.
Day 4 After breakfast we traverse below Auger Point Mt. to the ridge overlooking Buttle Lake. Buttle Lake, named for Commander John Buttle who explored the area in the 1860s, is the major body of water in the park. It and many of the other lakes and waterways can provide good fishing for cutthroat and rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. Camp.
Day 5 We hike out to Buttle Lake and return to Strathcona Park Lodge for a well-earned sauna, delicious dinner and social evening.
Day 6 Breakfast and Depart in shuttle back to Courtenay. |
