5/6/8 Day Mount Robson Berg Lake Trail
HT#18 Mount Robson
Overview: Mount Robson is located in the Canadian Rockies, 80 km west of Jasper, Alberta and is the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies, 3954 m high rising over 3000 m from the valley floor. Mount Robson is comprised of sedimentary bedrock that is flat lying, which cannot be eroded by glaciers as quickly as the sloping layers of bedrock. It is believed that Mount Robson was named after Colin Robertson, an officer in the Hudson’s Bay Company, in 1820.The Shuswap Indians of the area refer to the mountain as “Yuh-hai-has-kun”, which means “the mountain of the spiral road to heaven”. On July 31, 1913, Austrian guide Conrad Kain and his two clients, Albert MacCarthy and William Foster, were the first people to climb Mount Robson. Our multi-day backpacking trip at Mount Robson, is 21 km one-way with an elevation gain of 788 m. The trailhead begins at Berg Lake and follows the Robson River to Kinney Lake, through to the Valley of a Thousand Falls, past Emperor Falls ending at Berg Lake. There are numerous campsites along the trail route. Along the trail you can expect to see beautiful turquoise lakes, the spectacular colour results from the glaciers finely grounding the rock material. There is also a micro rainforest along the Robson River with trees such as the Douglas fir, cedar, spruce and hemlock. Hoary marmots (large member of the squirrel family) are also common along the trail to Berg Lake.
Day
Itinerary
01
We welcome you in the evening to our office in Canmore. We'll go over the trip with you and check to see that you are properly outfitted, and then see you back to our hotel accommodation for the evening.
02
Transfer on the spectacular Icefield Parkway to Jasper and Mount Robson with a short hike en-route. We camp at Robson Meadows for the night.
03
We drive to the nearby helipad then fly 15 minutes by helicopter further into Mount Robson Provincial Park, landing near Robson Pass. We then cart our gear about 500 m to the nearby campground and set up camp. Afterwards, we head off towards Berg Lake for the rest of the afternoon..
04
How about a hike to Snowbird Pass? The meadows and views are gorgeous and there’s a great view of the Robson Glacier, which covers the eastern flanks of the peak. (21.6 km of walking)
05
Another day of hiking in the shadow of Mount Robson. This time we head to Mumm Basin and one of the best views of the north face of Robson. (14.8 km of walking)
06
Well, we can’t put off the backpacking forever, and now it’s time to head down the valley. Carrying our personal gear and a share of group camping gear, we hike past Berg Lake, Emperor Falls and down to the Whitehorn Camp in the lower valley. (4 Hours, mainly downhill)
07
After a leisurely start we skirt the tranquil waters of Kinney Lake then hike in the shade of lush Columbian rain forest before arriving at the trailhead 4 hours later. We then drive back along the Icefields Parkway to Canmore, where a warm shower and an evening of celebration awaits us
