If you're looking for the best Orca viewing and Native Cultural sea kayaking tour in Johnstone Strait, at a reasonable price, then this is the trip for you. Located in the heart of Blackfish Sound, our cozy floating lodge 'Gala kas la', will provide you with the ultimate home base while you experience the Orca adventure of a lifetime. The superb location of the lodge provides us the good fortune to kayak to the most desirable areas within Johnstone Strait.Within five-minutes of paddling from the lodge we will have the opportunity to view the Orca whales on one of their frequent journeys into Blackfish Sound - photo opportunities are amazing. NOTE - Arrival Information - You will travel with us or meet us in the eclectic northern town of Port McNeill. We will leave Port McNeill the next morning via water taxi at 9:00 am, and be delivered to the 'Gala kas la' lodge, where you will be issued your paddling gear supplied through us. After a brief discussion the guides will give out bunk assignments. Regarding trip logistics, the guides will go over them with you at this point and they will also discuss your gear with you and provide advice as needed. From there the rest of the night is yours to relax. We will also take time to visit native petroglyphs and the abandoned native site at Mammalilaculla.

Board a water taxi for a scenic trip through the emerald green waters of the Inside Passage to the base camp. The site for our permanent base camps were chosen with great care; they are an ideal mix location and view. Our Maggy Point camp is the only camp of its kind located within the boundaries of the Broughton Archipelago Provincial Marine Park. The park is made up of myriad of small islands that are ideal for kayaking and exploring. Maggy Point base camp is set in on a peninsula with amazing ocean views. It features a covered central meeting-cooking location, high quality Mountain Hardware 3 person tents (we only put 2 people to a tent) on wooden platforms, and our funky hot wilderness shower. Each site has it's own platform where the tents are securely fastened for maximum comfort and stability. Each tent is also covered by a tarp to allow extra room to move around and stay dry in case it rains. Our other camp, Hanson Hideaway, is strategically located along one of the most commonly used travel routes for the whales. It is not uncommon to have an up close view of the whales from the cliff area in our camp that we call the Orca Lounge, as the whales swim past. Relaxation, comfort and security are what our guests can expect in both of our camps. Each site features lush green, forested landscapes with tremendous ocean views - a place where you are sure to feel a real connection to the natural surroundings. The camps themselves are designed with your comfort and enjoyment in mind. Each site features covered wilderness kitchens/ meeting areas, ecologically conscious bathroom facilities, hot showers and welcoming tent sites. Without question, we have two of the best basecamp sites in the area. By combining the use of two of these excellent camp locations on one trip, we ensure that your kayaking expedition will be a more complete experience; whales and the Broughton Archipelago!

We start off the day with a hearty breakfast prepared with great care by your guides. Our daily kayaking plan is organized to provide the best opportunity for viewing the killer whales and other marine creatures that inhabit this area, and to use the currents and winds to our best advantage. A typical kayaking day involves a full day of paddling separated by a lunch break (usually 1 hour) and the occasional stop to stretch legs. We are usually away from the base camps for the full day. Using our VHF radios we stay in contact with a network of researchers and operators to ensure our best chance to encounter the killer whales. Our guides also carry a hydrophone (underwater microphone) so that we can listen to the voice of the killer whales as they pass.

Friday afternoon we will be picked up at 15:00 by the water taxi and arrive back into Port McNeill approximately 1 hour later or 16:00. We arranged this tour to run Monday to Friday to allow you ample time over the weekends to travel and make your connections.

Johnstone Strait, is known as the best location in North America in which to view wild Killer Whales in their natural habitat. This three-day sea kayaking and whale watching tour will focus on Orca and wildlife observation. Travelling by sea kayak provides an intimate experience with the marine and surrounding terrestrial environment. Everyday as we paddle along Johnstone Strait, we will be on the look-out for pods of killer whales. Your excitement will build as you witness the Orcas towering dorsal fin rising from the water and listen to their powerful breathing as they surface. Encounters with killer whales on the water is an experience that will last a life-time. To fully appreciate your Orca viewing experience, we will provide the natural history interpretation of the Orca pods we encounter. Drawing from our years of experience and referring to our photo identification manuals, you will learn to identify individual Orcas. Using our hydrophone (an underwater microphone) you will have the opportunity to listen in on their vocalizations. Hear their echolocation clicks that are used for navigation and to locate salmon, or their distinctive squeals and squawks used for social communication between the individuals and groups.
The thrill of viewing wild Orca in their natural habitat, is matched only by the splendour of the Johnstone Strait scenery. On one side of the Strait rising out of the ocean, the temperate rainforest mountains of Vancouver Island; on the other, the glaciated mountain peaks of the Coastal Range on mainland British Columbia. This is an experience you do not want to miss! This sea kayak tour is popular, so reserve early to secure the dates you want! Our Johnstone Strait sea kayaking with Orca tours depart near the coastal village of Port McNeill, located on the north-eastern end of Vancouver Island. Guests are required to arrive to Port McNeill, the evening prior to the trip departure date. The tour finishes on the last day for around 4:00 pm, therefore if you are planning to get to Port McNeill by air service please schedule your flights accordingly.
