7 Days Northern Rockies Wilderness Safari
|
|
Overview: The picture-perfect Lodge fits harmoniously into 300 private acres of bench land overlooking the Peace Reach of Williston Lake. Our southern exposure provides magnificent views of the lake and the Canadian Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 729m. The closest city to the lodge is Fort St. John, 1.5 hours (110 km). The historic town of Hudson's Hope is only 25 minutes away. Exceptional service, great dining, good company and breathtaking scenery are the hallmarks of this facility. The main lodge features eight guest suites with private bath and a satellite internet connection. Common areas include the dining room and lounge with fireplace. We are so fortunate to be a small part of a place called the Serengeti of the North (also known as the Northern Rockies of BC). It is one of the most significant wilderness areas in North America. The wildlife populations are unparalleled in British Columbia - including mountain caribou, elk, moose and Stone Sheep. The area, some 6.3 million hectares, supports black and grizzly bears, as well as coyotes, wolves, wolverines and cougars. At the heart of the Northern Rockies ecosystem is 50 interconnected, unroaded and undeveloped watersheds. The mountains and boreal plains it encompasses form a globally significant wilderness ecosystem, of incredible magnitude and beauty, and is as pristine as one can find in this day and age.
Our summer programs are designed with a truly Canadian experience in mind. Your guided adventures and tours of the area include access by helicopter and boat into the magnificent wilderness. In this way we can leave "without a trace". Each day your friendly, professionally trained guides will help you discover a part of this wilderness through activities that can be accommodated to suit all abilities, experience and energy levels. Heli-hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy the best that the Canadian wilderness has to offer. Helicopters take you quickly to the best of the hiking terrain we have to offer. After you've satisfied you personal appetite for adventure and excitement you return each night to your luxury accommodations and cuisine. Enjoy an evening of great music, the finest of beverages, and a stroll on the wrap-around deck for a soak in the outdoor hot tub under the Northern Lights. Guests have the option to drive or fly to the lodge.

After you arrive from the Fort St John area you will be greeted at the Lodge. It is our aim to make this your special week of personalized adventure and mountain activities.
Accommodation: The lodge sits majestically perched high above the Peace Reach arm of Williston Lake, and is nestled in amongst our own private 300 acres of Aspen forest. Not another soul around for miles and miles, (thousands of square km in some directions); just the wildlife, the lake, the mountains, blue skies and northern lights. Non-extreme sports and guided activities, as well as great dining, good company and breathtaking scenery are the hallmarks of our Lodge. The lodge has eight beautifully decorated suites within the lodge. For those who wish more private accommodations, you will find adjacent to the lodge and tucked in the Aspen forest, a beautiful two-bedroom Mountain Chalet. Made of logs and fully furnished, this chalet offers our guests two private bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a loft equipped with a hide-a-bed. A kitchen, living room with outside, wrap around deck, and a laundry room completes this beautiful 'home away from home'. The main Lodge offers our guests for their use and enjoyment a sauna, a heated outdoor Jacuzzi, fitness and massage rooms with spa services. Laundry service is available upon request. A 'boot room' with clothing and gear-drying equipment is provided.
The satellite television in the Great Room provides our guests with digital photo previewing capabilities. As well as a fully stocked bar, an incredible wrap-around deck welcomes those who wish to continue to 'drink' in the breathtaking beauty of the lake, the mountains or the 'Northern Lights' when they choose to perform their incredible light show. Each of our rooms has free Internet access and all rooms have private bathrooms. We can accommodate 16 guests in-house based on double occupancy, with 4 to 6 guests in the Chalet. Each morning a hearty breakfast is served in our dining room located in the main Lodge, and evening apre's-adventure snacks and a full three to four course dinner is served either in the dining room or outside on its wrap-around deck where you can enjoy your meal surround by a commanding view of the lake and nearby mountains. Our bar offers its guests a fine selection of wines and carries a great selection of premium liquors as well as soft drinks and juices. Well trained chefs draw inspiration from all over the world, and our menu, like our guests, is an eclectic palette infused with international flavors: on day from Spain, one day from Italy, one day from France. For some it will be a 'home cooked meal'; for others it will be a new dining experience. Lunches are served picnic-style either on mountain tops, along the banks of crisp, clear mountain streams nestled on the velvet floors of valley bottoms surrounded by flowers and overlooked by walls of mountains.

The Program: Your vacation is not written in stone. We will provide you with personalized versions of each activity. Groups consist of four guests and one guide. Therefore the pace at which we pursue our outdoor adventure goals can be modified to suit you. It is our goal to exceed your vacation expectations. The adventures that we undertake are unique to this area. Wildlife will be viewed on each outing, and we may see many different large mammals on any one-day including bears. Heli-hiking takes you to areas of unique natural and human history, including the karst cave formations, alpine lakes and meadows, ridge and mountaintops, fossil beds, and mineral spring ponds. Your knowledgeable guide will share tidbits on the local ecology and biology, all the while ensuring your comfort and safety.
Your A-Star Helicopter and private guide will provide you with easy access to mountain plateaus where each day during your hikes you may have the opportunity to view and photograph grizzly or black bears feeding in blueberry patches; or you may encounter stone sheep in the small meadows next to steep rock faces which they utilize to escape predators.
Your group will explore the Peace Reach arm of Williston Lake by boat. This is the only watershed which crosses through the Rocky Mountains from west to east. Here you will visit one of only two areas in the world where you will find and explore exposed Triassic rock, from a period in time some 200 to 250 million years ago. You can view the fossilized remains of Ichtyosaurs, a large marine reptile which ruled the oceans during this period.
During a day of River Cruising on the mighty Peace River from the historic pioneer village of Hudson's Hope to Bear Flats, the emphasis is on waterfowl watching and photography with your guide and fellow guests. Before your return to Torwood Lodge your group will have the opportunity to visit the historic log church, pioneer museum and former trading post in Hudson's Hope.
In our small group environment we are able to provide you with a personalized, safe and interesting adventure experience. It will always be our goal to exceed your vacation expectations.
- Three days of heli-hiking that includes cave viewing
